Excellent coverage on all the language's features.However there are some parts that I didn't like:The first is that I think I didn't need to read all the way on how to implement an inverted index search engine. Just the idea of how it's implemented in some chapter would be fine. After all I bought an F# book, not a search engine book.The other, and for a similar reason, is that the book explains the .Net framework again. I understand that the book states that "no previous experience with functional programming or .NET is required" but, in my opinion, I should have read that somewhere in the cover.I could have used:More techniques that involves integrations with Type Descriptors.More functional programming techniques like the part that explains tail recursion, continuations, etc, it was an excellent chapter. I wish that part could have been longer. I would gladly trade it with the Events chapter or the search engine one.

A good book, but as a seasoned C# developer I found it jumped around a lot. In the code samples the book often uses techniques it hasn't even covered yet, and for the more bizarre and ugly aspects of the F# language(at least to a C# programmer's perspective) it very often says "we'll explain this later" without ever really doing so.Still, a good introduction to F# that left me wanting to learn more and understand why they did things a certain way.

For years, the quality of technical books has been plummeting. Within the first chapter of this book I recognized within it a modern miracle; a well-written book about programming. Not just accurate – but clear, engaging, and concise. I've bought 4 copies so far, and will probably purchase more as they keep getting lent out.

I never used F# but I'm interested in learning it, so I got this book. I'm about a quarter through now and it's very good to understand. It might be nice, if it would have some exercises, but that's okay.

The book is written in narrative style. The author provides samples and explains them thoroughly, which is good for a first few chapters where the concept of data structure and language style are still familiar. But when it comes to a complex topic, for example Pattern Matching, without giving technical detail of what patterns are possible, you will be wonder if there is anything more that can become a pattern.. and where can it be used elsewhere. It's the best if you can have the MSDN library for reference, but it's not always the case (e.g. reading the book on a train).The multithreading chapter is bloated with Task Parallel Library, which is not really F# feature. It'd be better if the book can provide only F# features and focus only the detail of F# (and how to use it efficiently).My tip is if you are going to read this book, you should haven't at least skimmed F# topics in MSDN/wiki and try to write some F# code first, it'll help you understand the book content easier.

I met Chris at PDC 2008 and was impressed with the summary of F# then, and have gotten each of his books for their concise explanations and examples.

If you're looking for your first F# book, get this one. After just a few chapters, you'll see just how beautiful and simple F# is. The programs you'll write will be shorter and easier to understand than programs you write in other languages. Your code will have all the safety of .NET's static type system, but the brevity of dynamically typed languages such as Python. You'll be able to walk away from your code for a year, and when you return to it you'll immediately see what you were doing. You'll be able to tap into the huge .NET ecosystem, and use libraries written in any other .NET language. Lastly, your F# programs will run on Linux and OSX using Mono. Chris Smith's writing is clear, succinct, and fun to read. For your second book on F#, try Expert F# 3.0.

Preface

The Japanese writing system is so different from the English alphabet that written Japanese may seem to be more complicated than it really is. Actually, Hiragana symbols, which comprise the basis of Japanese writing, are not difficult to learn. By using this workbook as a study guide, the student should be able to learn all the Hiragana symbols easily, in a relatively short time.

This workbook is specially designed and organized so that the beginning student, who is studying Japanese as a foreign language, can learn Hiragana through self-study, without the aid of an instructor. Each section contains sufficient explanation and exercises to enable students to study and practice on their own until proficiency has been attained. Consequently, the use of this workbook will eliminate the need for extensive writing drills in class. The class time can then be utilized more effectively for matters that require the presence of an instructor, such as question-and-answer type oral drills.

This book is composed of four chapters: chapter 1 introduces the forty-six basic Hiragana and the sixty-one modified symbols which are derived from them. Chapter 2 explains how to write words using Hiragana symbols. Chapter 3 shows how to write sentences, and chapter 4 contains review exercises. The derivation of Hiragana is presented in Appendix B.

In learning any foreign language, it is important to place equal emphasis on the four skills: hearing, speaking, reading and writing. Therefore, it is an essential prerequisite to become very familiar with Hiragana for the eventual mastery of Japanese. The student will find that diligent use of this workbook will be of great benefit in the quest for proficiency in Japanese.

Throughout this workbook, the Modified Hepburn System is used, for the most part, to Romanize Japanese words and sentences. This widely used system comes the closest to representing the correct Japanese sounds and facilitates learning Japanese pronunciation. It is also known as the Hyojun, or standard, System. (The original Hepburn System is no longer used, so references to the "Hepburn System" actually mean the Modified Hepburn System. The two are nearly identical, differing in only a few points.)....

Many books and talks emphasize modeling your domain and business logic without worrying about a DB, but many times they fail to really show you how to execute on that.This book was awesome for me because it executed on that concept fully, and resulted in a functioning stateful application that doesn't involve a DB.Towards the end, the code for the UI side was a little hand-wavy to show the data flow conceptually, but once you get that far definitely check out the sample repo online to help drive home how to play with channel based messaging.

Over the time I've been working with Elixir, I've seen the Elixir community attract a majority of people who are already established web developers who've worked on web apps previously. The biggest hurdle for these new Elixir developers is figuring out how to grasp the language, the OTP mindset, and how to best approach building an application from the very foundations. The current resources for explaining what OTP is, how to use it properly, and basic Elixir application design patterns are sparse.I've worked with Lance before and seen him talk at previous conferences. This book distills down exactly how to get into the right frame of mind for Elixir development. Over the course of the book, you build a simple game. The first half of the book presents the simple concepts of regular code + data. But beyond this, Lance lays down the foundations of OTP on the existing game logic. And by the end of the book, you'll start to connect the game to a web interface.With great discussions on what "applications" mean in Elixir (they have a specific meaning!), to how to best approach decoupling in Elixir, this book jumpstarts the fundamentals that you would otherwise learn through a typical trial-and-error cycle with Elixir.

After meeting Lance at a conference last fall I bought the beta version of this book. It was time and money well spent. This book doesn't focus much on the syntax of Elixir. For that, I recommend Dave Thomas's book. This book is a patient step by step guide through the best practices of Elixir and functional programming. We build a game that's "battleship" with a different name, and for the first half of the book we don't even touch the Phoenix framework. This is intentional, because Lance makes sure we separate our business logic from our web logic. The book's style does a lot of hand holding, which is what I needed. I spent most of the time just copying Lance's code like a monkey at a typewriter.I've now read three books on Elixir. Dave Thomas's book, this one, and Chris McCord's "Programming Phoenix". I would recommend starting with Dave Thomas's book, reading this book second, and Chris McCord's book after that.
