About the Author

Lawrence Revsine. John and Norma Darling Distinguished Professor of Financial Accounting. Kellogg Graduatt School of Management, Northwestern University, BS 1963, MBA 1965, Ph.D. 19681 Northwestern University; CPA 1963

Lawrence Revsine joined the Kellogg faculty in 1971 and served as chair of the Accounting Information and Management Department for eight years.

The author of several books on various financial reporting issues, he has had approximately 50 articles published in leading academic journals.

His academic recognitions include participation in three American Accounting Association Doctoral Consortia. He has received both Ford Foundation and Peat Marwick Mitchell Foundation research grants. He was selected the American Accounting Association's; Distinguished Overseas Lecturer, and the AAA named him the 1992 Outstanding Educator.: The Illinois CPA Society designated Revsine its 1993 Outstanding Educator. Professors Revsine received the Alumni Choice Faculty Award from the 1995 Reunion Classes; this award is given to the Kellogg faculty member who has had the greatest impact on their professional and personal lives.

Professor Revsine has been a consultant to the American Institute of Certified Public: Accountants, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Financial Accounting; Standards Board and served on the Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council.

He is a consultant to industry on external reporting issues and regulatory cases and has taught extensively in management development and continuing executive education programs in the United States and abroad. Professor Revsine has received numerous commendations for teaching excellence, including Teacher of the Year from the Kellogg Graduate Management Association student group, and the Sidney J. About the Author

Karen Clippinger received her master's degree in exercise science from the University of Washington in 1984. Her lifelong work has focused on the application of scientific principles to enhance alignment and movement performance while reducing injury risk. She is currently a professor at California State University at Long Beach, where she teaches functional anatomy for dance, Pilates, placement for the dancer, prevention and care of dance injuries, and dance science related to teaching technique. Ms. Clippinger has also taught dance anatomy and kinesiology courses at UCLA, Scripps College, the University of Washington, and the University of Calgary. She serves as a faculty member for Body Arts and Science International.

Prior to her appointment at CSULB, Ms. Clippinger worked as a clinical kinesiologist for 22 years. She has also served as a consulting kinesiologist for the Pacific Northwest Ballet since 1981 and has consulted for the U.S. race walking team, the U.S. Weightlifting Federation, and the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Ms. Clippinger has given more than 350 presentations in the United States and abroad. She has taught workshops at many universities and has authored numerous articles and chapters. She wrote an exercise column for Shape magazine for four years and served as one of the founding coeditors in chief of the Journal of Dance Medicine and Science from 1996 to 2005.

This science fiction novel, set in the not too distant future, has as its backdrop an environmentally ravaged, highly dystopian Thailand. In this future, biogenetics have run wild, unleashing a plague of viruses and biological scourges, leading to worldwide famine and a breakdown in societies. Carbon based fuels have run their course and energy is largely based upon power generated by human beings and beasts of burden (for example, treadle powered computers).In this world, generators and distributors of nourishment hold all the power (calorie companies). Biogenetics is key to developing new food strains that are resistant to the many plagues that have destroyed most of the known crop sources.This novel bears a striking resemblance to Ian Macdonald's River of Gods, though I found this to be quite a bit easier and more enjoyable to follow. Both feature a dystopian society set in a third world environment (Macdonald in India). Where River of Gods foresaw a society rich in technology, particularly in the area of bioengineered life forms, the society in The Windup Girl has virtually collapsed. Any technology found in this novel is in the bioengineering needed to ensure an adequate and safe food supply.As power sources have largely disappeared, and nourishment is dangerously scarce, the balance between the energy necessary to physically produce power, and the energy available from the scarce food supply is the key to survival. As a result, the calorie is largely the measure of wealth and power.The characters in the novel are rich and well developed. The "calorie company" agent, the windup girl (an archaic, crèche grown life form), the yellow card man (Chinese refugee), the Dung King (think Master Blaster from Thunderdome) all play pivotal roles within the framework of the story. Particularly interesting is the tension and conflict present between the Thai kingdom's ministries of Environment and Trade. In the face of worldwide epidemics and famine, the Environmental ministry (the white shirts) held absolute sway and were rabid and uncompromising in their isolation and protection of the Thai sovereignty. Now, however, international trade has reemerged and the moneyed interests have begun to reopen the borders to immigration and the import of potentially dangerous goods and food stuffs.This is a fantastic novel. It is highly original in its vision of what environmental degradation and unrestricted bio-engineering could bring in the near future, without being overly "preachy" or pedantic. It simply provides the resulting landscape, peoples it with fascinating characters and tells an engaging story. Highly recommended.

This is a unique novel. Some people have claimed that it is steampunk rather than science fiction. I admit, there are steampunk elements but the novel has a sound basis in speculative fiction. The world of the novel is not an impossible world, as has been my experience with steampunk.Windup Girl is not an easy novel to read. It's long, there are a lot of characters, the world is complex, people's motivations are diverse as are their personalities. The local, future Bangkok, also takes some time to adjust to, at least for me since I have never been to Bangkok. It takes a while to sink into the world and know your way around. That is, as well as any of the characters do at any rate, which is not very well. Everyone has a different view of what's going on and is keeping secrets from all of the other characters. No one is simple. No one is easy to relate to. The Windup Girl, Emiko, is probably the most identifiable character, which says a lot.I enjoyed the novel. I enjoyed the challenge of reading and understanding. I enjoyed the author's depth of understanding of this alien landscape. The use of Thai words and concepts gives the world substance and character.While I am giving it five stars -- which it deserves -- I caution potential readers that this is not a book for everyone. If you're looking for something light and uplifting, this isn't it.One last point, a negative one, there is a huge unresolved issue at the end of the book. Normally I can forgive authors for not clearing up every little thing, but this was like getting punched in the face. Come to think of it, I think I'll knock it down to four stars just for that.

Interesting book with great characters and a nice jump into Thai culture and language with a bit of a sci-fy twist---hard scy-fy in my opinion. The books appears to be based on sound ethnography and history of the region along with sound science being stretched or extrapolated to a 'near-future' setting in which most characters, in all of their predicaments, take all kinds of risks to gain some semblance of their various 'old ways' and places now seemingly gone or rapidly disappearing in the rearview mirror. A beautiful book of action laden with numerous palpable description, to the point of actually smelling the streets or the dunk or feeling the rumble of the FEW ''old' gasoline/diesel cars left. Read it and get ready to travel the canals of Bangkok in a genetically modified future world!
